My Donnie

Donnie is my older brother.  He was killed instantly at age 10 by a speeding vehicle.  Papa picked him up from the road and carried him off.  An ambulance was called, but the life had ebbed from him.  I was, at the time 7 yrs. and 5 mo’s of age.  The time was an extremely difficult one for our family – especially Mama and Papa.  It happened on Hwy 70 not too far from Greensboro.  I had not gone with Papa and his parents to visit Jesse, a brother to Papa.  Donnie had gone from where the house was across the road to Jesse’s store and got some gum.  I suppose he was so excited that he ran straight without looking at the road for traffic.  Had I gone with them that day, I probably would have been with Donnie.  I remember the whole time of that tragedy.  After I joined the church, I had Donnie’s temple work done in less than a year after.  I sent his name to be done because I could not be ordained an Elder until I had been in the church for a year.  I am very sure that he received the gospel.  I hope he is one of many who are there in the spirit world praying for us as we pray for each other and for our ancestry who are there with Donnie.
