Formal that My Mama Made Me

Grandpa’s first job out of college was with Ernst and Young accounting firm in Lansing, Michigan.  He worked with them for two years in order to get his CPA certificate.  Every year, the firm threw a formal Christmas party.  I loved getting dressed up.  I never went to a Formal dance, never went to Prom.  So for me it was the only time other than my wedding day, that I could get all dolled up.  We rented the tux, I got my hair done, and wore what I thought was a beautiful dress.  This particular year, I had asked mama to make me a dress.  I believe we chose the pattern and fabric together during one of our visits home.  She is still an amazing seamstress, and this dress was no easy task.  It is full of difficult detail.  But it was gorgeous.

The sad thing was, I had just given birth to our second child just a few months before, and I didn’t fit in it!  I was terribly disappointed, and had to scramble for a different dress.  I did wear this dress at Great Grandma Carol’s wedding to her second husband.  I felt like a princess in it.

My girls have not chosen to wear it for anything.  Apparently it’s too old looking.  I think one of my nieces wore it for a High School play production.  It still hangs in my closet, and we pull it out now and again to see if it fits the bill for a prom.

It is one of my few true treasures.
